Work, community, play

Instagram

I led design for Instagram’s Product Foundation organization. I supported the strategy and teams building Instagram’s design systems, secondary interfaces, and notifications platform. As Instagram grew, we made sure the end-to-end experience stayed simple and well-crafted for over a billion people globally. We cared about accessible, inclusive experiences by default. We strove for less noisy, more useful app notifications. We made Instagram faster and more performant. If we did our jobs well, we set the rest of Instagram’s product areas up for success.

We explored Instagram across all platforms—Android, iOS, web browsers, affordable devices, and canvases beyond the phone. Evolving Instagram’s design patterns and principles, we regularly asked ourselves how the product should adapt to the pace of world culture.

Sprout Social

As a Director of Product Design at Sprout Social, I looked after several design teams crafting social media publishing, reporting, and analytics tools for businesses of all sizes. We developed new features while integratating a product platform with our acquisition of premium analytics startup Simply Measured.

Standing up Sprout’s first design systems team, we focused on unifying and simplifying the design language of the brand and product. We made it faster and easier for teams to make quality campaigns and software. Our work was featured in Laying the Foundations. I also led Sprout’s product visual redesign—the first update to the platform’s design in seven years. Shortly after shipping the redesign, Sprout Social became a public company.

We were proud of the diverse team we grew and the work we built. In 2018, our team was recognized with AIGA’s Corporate Leadership Award, celebrating design excellence in business. Learn more about that team in a profile by InVision.

All together now

Trunk Club

I served as the head of the product design team for Trunk Club, supporting a talented group of designers rethinking fashion retail. We positioned design as a strategic partner to the business, providing research, software design, to in-person customer experience design. Beyond our in-house and customer-facing products, I directed the 2017 redesign of Trunk Club’s marketing site, focusing on the at-home trunk business while reshaping a more approachable brand.

We cared a lot about pushing each other and growing our careers. If you manage a small design team, feel free to use our product design kit and career ladders we made as inspiration.

AIGA Chicago

From 2015–2017, I served as a President for AIGA Chicago, leading a board of directors and volunteers to educate and connect Chicago design communities. We sought critical discourse on design and focused on making our industry more inclusive through events and initiatives that elevate diversity and civic duty. See what it’s like being involved with AIGA Chicago.
